What is digital scanning?
Digital scanning is a modern, high-tech way for dentists to take detailed 3D images of your teeth without all the discomfort. Instead of using trays filled with that thick, putty-like material, your dentist now simply moves a small handheld scanner around your mouth. Within seconds, a precise digital model of your teeth appears on a screen.
Who is it for?
We use digital scanning for two different reasons: Firstly, we will often scan your mouth as part of your check-up. This gives us a digital record of your mouth which we can compare from year to year to see what is changing – fillings that may be starting to deteriorate or surfaces that are wearing down maybe. It allows us to show you what is happening in your mouth and allow you to make sense of what we can see with you.

Secondly, we use the digital scanner to replace the old impressions that were needed when you needed a crown or an appliance.

Why do we use a scanner rather than impressions?
1. No More Gagging or Discomfort

For many people, the worst part of dental impressions was the feeling of that cold, gooey material sitting in their mouth, sometimes triggering a gag reflex. With digital scanning, that’s no longer an issue. The scanner is small and gentle, making the process much more comfortable—especially if you have a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty keeping your mouth open for long periods.

2. Quicker and More Convenient

Traditional impressions take time to set, and sometimes they don’t turn out quite right, meaning you’d have to redo them. With digital scanning, there’s no waiting around. The scan is quick, often taking just a minute or two, and since it provides an instant 3D image, your dentist can check right away if everything looks good. This means fewer appointments and less time in the dental chair—something we can all appreciate!

3. More Accurate, Better-Fitting Dental Work

When it comes to dentures, crowns, or bridges, a perfect fit is crucial. The more precise the impression, the better your new dental work will feel and function. Digital scans capture every tiny detail of your teeth and gums, ensuring a much higher level of accuracy than traditional methods. This means your new dentures or crowns will fit better, feel more natural, and require fewer adjustments.

4. Safer and More Hygienic

Since digital scanning doesn’t involve messy materials or trays that go from one patient to another, it’s a cleaner, more hygienic process. There’s no risk of breathing in unpleasant smells or dealing with residue left behind in your mouth. Plus, with no physical models to store, everything is securely saved digitally, reducing clutter and the chance of losing important records.

5. Perfect for People with Mobility or Health Concerns

If you have arthritis, difficulty sitting for long periods, or other health conditions that make dental visits challenging, digital scanning can make the experience much easier. The quick and non-invasive nature of the process means less strain on your jaw and body, making it an excellent option for older patients.

How does it work?
The camera takes millions of images which the computer then builds together to create a 3D digital image. There is no harmful radiation. It’s like having your photo taken millions of times.
How long does it take?
A digital scan takes from a couple of minutes to about 5 minutes to build the 3D image.
How much does it cost?
The cost of this new technology is all part of the service. There is no additional cost to you.
