Have you ever been in the supermarket, looked at the shelves and not had a clue where to start? Here are 5 tips on choosing the right toothpaste for you;

1.Don’t be seduced by packaging and jargon

With hundreds of oral health products on the market it can be easy to pick the flashiest on the shelf, but this may not be the right choice for you.

2.Don’t choose herbal toothpastes

Now this isn’t applicable to all…just make sure they DO contain fluoride.

3.Make sure the product is suitable for you

Everybody has their own specific needs, check the packaging to make sure it does what you want it to. But be aware, if it says it’s a whitening toothpaste, it’s probably abrasive. That said, you’ll be brushing away healthy teeth enamel causing sensitivity in the long run. Being abrasive, it will create a rough surface and that just means more surface area to cause staining later too…so stick to traditional whitening with a professional trained dentist and use a toothpaste to keep them strong.

4.Check the ingredients

Especially important when it comes to fluoride content, ensure it has the correct amount of fluoride to protect your teeth. The ideal is between 1400 & 1500ppm.

5.If in doubt, ask your dental team:

Not sure about something, ask an expert, your dental team knows you and they are perfectly placed to ask to find the right product.
